My teammate and I competed at Festivus Games in November 2019. We were both less than one year into our CrossFit journey and weren't sure what went into preparing for competition. Coach Kyle coached us through strategy and mindset for each WOD. We spent the weeks leading up to the event testing our strategy. After each test run the three of us analyzed our execution and retested/tweaked our strategy as needed. By the time we reached the competition, we felt confident and prepared for the challenge. Coach Kyle wrote a Competition Day warm up/cool down protocol for each WOD, as well as a nutrition breakdown for the day. The support we felt leading up to that day enabled us to focus on our effort and bring our best.That day, Coach Kyle and several members from our gym came out to support and encourage us. When I first made the decision to sign up for the Festivus CrossFit Competition, I felt like I was crossing off a bucket list item. It was something I have wanted to do but never felt I’d have the opportunity or ability to do and to perform well at. After the excitement wore off, I immediately started second guessing my choice to sign up. As the date came closer and workouts were announced, I found myself being challenged to even get to the gym regularly. I was nervous about letting my partner down. I was scared of all the unknowns at a competition like this.
I’ve been told I wear my emotions on my sleeve, and case in point, one day after class Kyle asked if everything was ok. “I need a plan.” I told him. I am used to having training plans for runs to prepare me for a race. I was in the dark as how to train and prepare for Festivus. The entire situation was new to me and Kyle started right then in preparing me both physically and, even more importantly, mentally for the competition. He went above and beyond in preparing Angela and I for the event. He could clearly see our strengths and our weaknesses and had a way of helping us to see them and capitalizing on them; strategizing our workouts, nutrition, recovery, and mind set.
When the day came, I went into the event with a near minute by minute plan set up by Kyle and a mind set of “control what you can control and just do your best.” He taught me to use my nerves as energy- my nervousness was a good thing and to embrace it. All I wanted to do at Festivus was to walk away from the event feeling like I did my best and Kyle prepared us in every way to achieve that.
He and Alyssa made time amidst their busy schedule to be there for us that day to support us, to coach us, to encourage us, and when we needed it, to yell at us. I learned quickly that when Kyle talks, he has something important to say so you better listen. If he’s not talking, he is watching and analyzing.
Kyle didn’t seem surprised when Angela and I walked away with a 3rd place finish. We were definitely surprised when we were called to stand on the podium. That day was a ton of fun for us and our families and I give credit to Kyle for giving me the tools to enjoy it and to do my best- which ultimately worked out pretty well. Thank you Kyle for letting us represent BRSC that day and for all your efforts in helping us reach our goals!
I have to include this picture of Coach Kyle laying it out there for me. I must admit- he wasn’t wrong about anything this day. Kyle continues to help me improve and overcome things I didn’t think could be fixed.
