"Hi. I'm Colleen Jensen, age 43, mother of 7 and the last person you would expect to see in a gym! In November of 2017, I said yes to humor a friend as we both took a terrifying step into BRSC - a place that we now love! Aside from the obvious physical obstacles, I was concerned about re-aggravating a back injury with weight lifting.... never happened! Being under the watchful eye of a coach keeps my form correct and allowed me to challenge myself safely. I have truly come to appreciate what my body is capable of, watching my muscles transform through consistent effort, & my mental growth as I conquer workouts I thought would be impossible! I have made wonderful friends as we cheer for one another from our individual levels, (this is my social life😊)! Most of all, BRSC has helped boost my self-confidence and my attitude. I couldn't do a single push-up or sit-up in the beginning, and that has definitely changed. If I get myself there, my tribe takes care of the rest! Thanks BRSC!
"It all started as a kid when I was so skinny and I was called sticks and rubber band man. I always thought that I would never be or ever could be over weight like my dad. Well fast forward a few years and thinking I could still eat like I was 15 and not worry about nutrition or exercise. In 2012 I wanted to change all of that and started working out on my own in my house non stop for one year. Looked good, felt good everything was going good. End of 2013 that all came to a halt. I had a major fall and compressed both arms with a fracture to my left elbow and completely shattering both wrists and skull. To this day I still have a plate in my left elbow with limited mobility and can not bend left arm straight. Both wrists have plates and rods. I worked really hard to get function of both hands and with time there has not been much I can't do. However, lifting and strength just never really came back. For 5 years after the accident a ballooned to about 265 lbs.(i.e. my father). I hated what I became. Early 2018 my wife had signed my two youngest kids up for this kids training course at BRSC. I've driven by this building many times wondering what is this place all we need is another gym in Tremonton. Well boy was I wrong. Not sure if it was what Tremonton needed but it was what I needed. After watching the kids a couple of times and again remember 265 lbs. I decided to give it try. I first talked to Kyle and explained all of my circumstance and limitations. He was very understanding and right away assured me I would not have to do anything I wasn't comfortable and or couldn't do. So it began, my BRSC journey started March 2018. I have never looked back. I have lost over 40 lbs, run a sub 10 minute mile and gained strength in things I never thought I could do(rope climb, double-unders, toes to bar). On top of it all of that I have gained confidence and the most amazing friends ever. Thank you to all my workout buddies and the most amazing coaches ever. Kyle, Nicole, Carly, and Jodi."
"I love BRSC! It has strengthened and enhanced every good aspiration I have in my life through providing the perfect combo in supporting my health journey in the following ways:
"It's no exaggeration when I say BRSC saved my life! I had been in a 3+ year rut, I could not get control of my health. I was overweight, I had high blood pressure, and my thyroid levels were everywhere. I knew I wanted to be stronger I just didn't know how or where to start. So day 1 of trying BRSC out I was terrified to say the least! I knew there was going to be stuff I wouldn't be able to do, but that ended up being okay because EVERYTHING can be modified to your level. It has been 6 months since then, committing 3 days per week to this gym, I no longer have high blood pressure, and my thyroid levels are perfect. The coaches are nothing short of amazing! They focus on safety and efficiency of each movement for their members, and not once have I ever felt stupid when I have needed help with any movement. Thank you BRSC for creating opportunities for me succeed! My idea of what healthy looks and feels like has changed for the better, and I'm in a better place not only physically but mentally as well."
"BRSC became part of my journey to health on July 30, 2018. I had recently completed a nutritional weight loss program and reached my goal of losing 105 lbs. I was feeling great, and got the wild idea that I should try BRSC out.
Coach Kyle and the 'morning crew' members welcomed me right in. It had been over 10 years since I was intentionally, physically active so my strength and cardiovascular tolerance was incredibly weak. I will never forget the encouragement from the tribe, and the sense of accomplishment I felt after completing my first month.
It has been a whirlwind of challenge, accomplishment, encouragement and personal growth since joining BRSC. Learning and becoming aware of how my body responds and moves has been life changing. After spending much of my adult life as morbidly obese, I step into the gym each day grateful for the opportunity to surround myself with great people that have the same passion for health and life that I have. I will never again take for granted this healthy body that can complete these workouts.
The improvement I have seen in my strength, cardiovascular capacity and body has blown me away. I am able to do things I have never done in my life. BRSC has shown me that the sky is the limit and I am more than capable. Talk about life changing, that is exactly what BRSC and this great community of people have been to me."
"In a phone interview with my grandson, when asked what my favorite game was, I told him: CrossFit.
My love for this began when my son requested that his birthday wish was for my husband and I to join the gym and try out CrossFit. Jogging was my go-to form of exercise until this time, but my knees were starting to rebel about the constant jarring as I was aging. I knew I needed to find other alternatives for fitness.
After just one day, I realized how much I had neglected countless other muscles that jogging had not touched. Getting out of the car afterward, my husband and I were so weak and wobbly we had to hang onto the door frame to get out. We had a good laugh about that!
On June 30, 2017, Bear River Strength and Conditioning opened, and I was among the first to walk in. I was met by Kyle, who watched over me and made sure I was doing the movements correctly and that I was reaching for my full potential, even though I was 52 years old, and needed accommodations for my right shoulder replacement. The people there encouraged me too, and I was able to give them kudos for their efforts as well. I was hooked! I rarely missed a day, and if I did, I almost felt claustrophobic from lack of movement.
During training, Kyle asked me to figure out my “WHY” for attending the gym. I told him it was to be able to play hard with my family. Besides that, I was on top of the world doing my daily hobby, being part of a wonderful tribe, and feeling the benefits of being fit. Little did I know how important it was going to be as I fought for my life just 10 months later.
April 6, 2018 started out like every other day in the gym. But towards the end of the workout, I started feeling tight in my chest, sick to my stomach, and achy in my left arm. At first I thought maybe I had just pushed myself too hard, but when it didn’t go away, I told my husband that I was having signs of a heart attack. He took me to the hospital and sure enough, I had experienced a heart attack. There was an 80% blockage and as the doctors were beginning the procedure of placing a stent in my artery, my body starting seizing and I went unconscious. The
procedure was halted, and I was life flighted to the Neuro Critical Care Unit at the University of Utah where I continued seizing for 10+ hours. My brain was swelling because of the trauma, there were signs of a stroke, and the tests were showing little hope of recovery. Doctors told my family to gather near. Decisions were made about organ donations. However, on the 3rd day I started having some signs of recovery, and by day five I was conscious and transferred to the ICU unit where my condition continued to improve. Doctors took me to finish the placement of a stent, but by then the blockage had miraculously disappeared.
I transferred to the rehabilitation center at the hospital, where I learned to use my left side that had suffered nerve damage. I was in the hospital for two weeks. Two weeks after getting out of the hospital, I was back at the gym, slowly working my way back up to being able to do full workouts.
I share this story for two reasons. First, the doctor told me that if I had not been in good physical condition, I would have probably not survived the trauma my body faced with the abnormally long seizures. Second, another doctor told me that my physical condition helped speed up my recovery time in the rehabilitation center because my body had excellent muscle memory.
I am thankful for my life and the love I experienced to the degree I can hardly comprehend from family and friends including so many members of the gym. We all experience trials and we never really know when they will come, but to some degree we can control how we come out of them. It is the small decisions we make every day that makes a difference in the end. An occasional day of missing CrossFit wouldn’t have been a gamechanger for me. However, what if I had allowed myself to let my daily workouts slip by?
Since this time, I continue going to the gym every morning possible. I find that I am rarely sore because of the variety of muscle groups the workouts focus on each time. I have also become more aware of the importance of nutrition, getting enough sleep, and having my mind think more clearly. I participated in the gym’s challenge to focus on nutrition for 30 days. This included eating correct proportions of protein, vegetables, and healthy carbohydrates while cutting out all sugar and artificial
sweeteners. I lost 10 pounds and feel much better. I plan to continue eating this way for most of my meals in the future. This is just another example of how the gym continues helping me become my best self. I will continue playing my favorite game of CrossFit for as long as I am able. I love it! The atmosphere is fun, motivating and accepting. Kyle’s sense of humor makes me smile every day. He never lets an opportunity pass by to tease me just a little. Nicole Johnson, Carley Anderson, and Lyle Webb are also excellent coaches. Kyle knew they would live up to his expectations of having a top-notch gym experience for each member. I have a better quality of life by participating in this and will meet my goal of being able to play hard with my family."
"My name is Janeal Shaffer, and I am 70 years old. My first husband died in 1996 after a long battle with illness. My husband, Dan and I have 12 children. He has 5 and 7 grandchildren and I have 7 children, 28 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. I've always been a physically active person. I clean homes for a living which keeps me moving, but weight gain, especially around my torso, memory problems, anxiety, high blood pressure, lack of mobility, and stomach issues, were all closing in on me. My daughter, Tammy Jensen, invited me to come to BRSC and try it out. I was so nervous about joining, but with Tammy's encouragement I decided to try it. I had to find help somewhere. This might jump start the change I had been hoping for.
Kyle immediately set me up on a scaled workout, thank goodness! Even at that, the workouts were very challenging, but I could see progress along with the sore muscles. He made it fun and brought us all together by encouraging each of us to support one another. I've had some health issues along the way, but with each incident, he and his growing staff scaled my workouts to fit my needs. These are some of the results of the last two
-Dropped 30 pounds
-Thinking and memory improved
-Reduced anxiety and depression
-Confidence to push through hard things
-I can do box jumps, jump rope, spiderman, squats, wallballs, running, walking upstairs with ease, lunges, etc
-Lift weights, not real heavy but I'm lifting some
-Have better balance
-I feel younger, and move with more freedom
-Sustained bone density
-Increased muscle and strength in body
-Changing food choices
-Strength in my knees, legs, and back
It has been very rewarding to hear comments like skinny mom, or skinny grandma. The other night after watching a play at the Old Barn, one of the young actors, about 8 years old, came over to me and asked if I liked the play. I told him that I really enjoyed it. He said that he was in another play, and that there was a picture of him in the foyer and would I like to come look at it. I said that I would. I got up and started walking with him. He said, "boy you're fast". I asked, "What do you mean?". He then said, "Well, you walk a lot faster than other old ladies I have walked with". I commented, "I go to Cross Fit. Do you know what that is?" He said, "It sounds like some kind of exercise". I have laughed and enjoyed our conversation. It isn't as hard growing old when I can move, think, and enjoy being alive.
I give thanks to Kyle for the vision he has had to set up this gym for the purpose of changing people's lives for the better. I thank him, Carly, Nicole and Lyle for their positive guidance and encouragement in the workouts. Thank you to all who come to improve your lives. I'm so grateful for your example and the encouragement that you have given me, And thank to my precious daughter, Tammy, for standing by my side. All of this put together, has saved my life."
"A little over a year ago my mobility in my back and legs was going downhill fast. I have had 2 back surgeries, and was worried I'd have to have a 3rd. I knew I needed to do something. I've had doctors tell me I'd never do weight lifting again and the best thing I could do is run. I run all the time, and I love it, but it wasn't cutting it. I found BRSC through my son doing the kids course. Kyle has helped me gain so much strength in my back and legs, and is always there to make sure I do movements correctly, so I don't further injure my back. I have been able to utilize what the coaches there have taught me at the gym, on our farm.
I never thought I'd be able to lift a barbell or do a pull up again, after my surgeries, and when I first started I was really discouraged because I felt like I should be able to lift more. I've taken it slow and am gaining strength and I'm so happy I've stuck with it. The atmosphere and camaraderie is contagious at BRSC. My body craves the workouts, I have more energy, and my legs and back feel great. Kyle and the other coaches never made me feel anything but welcome and I'm truly grateful for the friends I've made at this gym!"
"In August of 2018, I went for a yearly medical exam. There I was informed my blood pressure was dangerously high and my blood work was anything but good. This information coupled with my mothers history of severe heart disease, prompted me to make a significant life style change. In my mind I was active, but it lacked direction and focus. I knew that I needed something structured and specific to my needs. Being 58 and a life of lower back and disc problems made me nervous, but Kyle at BRSC took all things into consideration and made a plan for me.
Here I am 16 months later, 1 year older, 36 pounds lighter, no blood pressure issues, cholesterol, HDL and LDL are great, a stronger core, no back issues, and the gym helped with my rehab from shoulder surgery! What a blessing! This place has been a life-saver...literally! My anxiety-gone, confidence-back. So grateful for a place like this right in my backyard."
"A couple of years ago I was diagnosed with a condition that required a pace-maker. In May, I sat down with my doctor land he said I need to pick a gym to strengthen my heart. This was the beginning. The last week in May I pushed myself into the gym door, which was completely out of my comfort zone. The first class, the very first day, I was embraced and felt that I was home. Before the gym I looked at my heart condition as a disability. I've now embraced that this is me, my body, and what I have to do and it's OK. It doesn't need to stop me from setting goals and working hard. There's been three things that have had the biggest impact during my journey...
1). I signed up with Kyle doing Mental Giant focusing on nutrition. Learning about nutrition and combining it with the workout was huge. It was a complete game changer.
2). The coaches. They all keep me going and reaching further than I normally would.
3). The tribe of people that are part of the gym. They are in that positive frame of mind, wanting better for their life, you can't help but be inspired by them.
This gym is set apart from anything I've ever been apart of. BRSC changed my life when I walked through the door that day."
"Before joining BRSC I was tired all of the time and had extra weight I didn't want. In fact, I was the heaviest I'd ever been. I never seemed to be able to motivate myself to use my at home gym. My friend told me how much she loved crossfit. I was hesitant because I'm not a morning person, but she talked me into it. I felt like death the first day!! My friend told me I would become addicted, but I didn't believe her. However, I preserved! I could feel my body getting stronger and a repeated sense of accomplishment with each workout. With that being said there has been times I've wanted to quit. Last Winter I was diagnosed with pneumonia and was out for 6 weeks. In the middle of my recovery, I missed the gym so much I came back before I was completely healed. I went to the doctor the next day and found that my oxygen levels were still low so I took another 2 weeks recovery. When I came back I felt like I was starting over again-I felt worse than the 1st day. I had to overcome that as well as the Mental Battle it brings. Realizing I can be a morning person, and learning the difference between good and bad fuel, as well as just sticking with it. The gym family is like my team. Even when we're doing individual workouts, we're still participating as a team because we're supporting and cheering each other on. They have kept me going as well as realizing that complaining and making excuses doesn't do anything for you. I try to keep focused on the good and how well it makes me feel."
"I heard of a new crossfit gym that had opened here in Tremonton, and everyone was saying they loved it. My oldest brother is an announcer for crossfit and my son is really into it, so I thought I would try it out. I fell in love, literally on the first workout. While I've been apart of the gym, I've had to overcome a lot of stuff. Probably the hardest thing has been thinking there are things that I can't do. I've had to tell myself "You can do it! Kyle is going to break it down for you or modify it until you can get to that point." Another point was the fear of "failing" in front of others. That's one thing that I love about this place is there's no judgement. I've seen so many results so far. Last Summer, I went on several hikes that I had done before and they were so much easier. I have more energy, I feel happier, and I sleep better. In addition, I've dropped 13 lbs and I am eating healthier than I ever have. I've never wanted to quit coming to the gym. I think it's because from the very beginning I loved the feeling in the gym. I never felt discouraged because everyone was so excited for me! When I workout I think of how Kyle says, "It's not your body giving up it's your mind." I feel a sense of community here, and I love it."
"I joined at BRSC and was really on and off for awhile. When I started coming in September I decided to stick with it for a few reasons. Weight wise I was the heaviest I had ever been, and my blood pressure was crazy high. With a family history of diabetes, I decided I didn't want that for myself. I decided I didn't want that for myself. I wanted to be able to enjoy life and not worry about being crippled when I'm old. That's what made me want to stick with it. Before joining BRSC I was not nearly as active as I am now. I would fall asleep any time I sat down anywhere. I'd almost fall asleep when I was driving. Generally, I was just lethargic and didn't want to do anything. Since joining BRSC, I've got a lot energy in my everyday life. The results I've seen have been crazy. I started the nutrition program with Kyle, and with the combination of my diet and CrossFit I have lost 45lbs since July. If I had any advice to give to someone is to just give it a try and stick with it. It's worth it for sure. For health reasons it is so beneficial. I feel good, have lost weight, and am not tired all the time like I used to be."
"I joined BRSC for the simple reason of I was tired of feeling crappy. Tired of being tired. I didn't feel good with myself physical wise. I saw the gym and thought that it could possibly be something that I liked. I drove by the gym for probably two years, and even contacted Kyle but decided against joining. One day I decided it was time, so I made another phone call to Kyle. I had done CrossFit awhile back in 2014-15, and when I moved up here in 2016 I just got super busy. Me and my wife added a baby to the family, and I stopped focusing on myself and my health. My life was focused around work and my family. I realized that I needed to do something with my physical health in order to be the best for my job and most importantly, my family. CrossFit has helped turn what I consider a pretty weak mindset into a strong mind, knowing that I can finish hard things even when I want to quit. Not only have I seen changes in my mindset, but physically as well. Since joining BRSC in July 2019, I've lost 30lbs, I'm way stronger than before and have gained flexibility and mobility I didn't know I could. I have so much more energy throughout the whole day and am able to keep up with my 3-year-old. Even though I've never focused on my nutrition, I feel like my eating has improved , and I'm more cognizant of my food. My advice to anyone would just be to walk through that door. The community that is being built here is awesome. The friendships being made are amazing and will be lifelong. Everybody is so welcoming, and it doesn't matter what your circumstances or disabilities are. Kyle and his staff are amazing and have scaling options to accommodate everyone."
"Prior to joining BRSC, I was a lot less sore hahaha :) I had done CrossFit in the past, so I knew I liked it. I just felt like I was in a slump with my everyday routine, and needed a new challenge for myself. I got started at BRSC for a few reasons. I have always enjoyed exercising, and my friend Leslie was wanting to try BRSC out. She wanted me to come with her, so she was my push. I decided to jump on the bandwagon with her, and give it a shot. I was excited to try it out. Come to find out, it was the change I needed in my life. Bear River Strength and Conditioning has taught me a lot. I’m not super competitive with other people, but it's taught me how to push myself in hard situations. Pushing for one more round. Telling myself I have to make it to a certain point. Once I get to that point that’s where I will really dig deep and tell myself this is where you will get stronger….push HARD! I hear Kyle’s voice in my head a lot telling me to keep going. Along with many lessons, there's been many results. Outside of the gym, I would say that I have noticed an increase in my energy level throughout the day. I’m able to keep up with my kids’ busy schedules. In the gym, I can tell I’ve gotten stronger in certain movements specifically. If I knew anyone thinking about joining BRSC I would tell them to DO IT! You won’t regret it. It is super fun once you get started. I like BRSC because of the coaches. The community and the little family is awesome and so welcoming. Everyone is so supportive of each other. The coaches take the time to teach you how to do the movements correctly, and help you learn if you’re doing them wrong!"
"Me and my wife were attending another CrossFit gym , and got to know a lot of the members there. They told us that they were also attending BRSC. One by one they all decided to transition just to BRSC. Me and Piper decided we better give it a shot and see what it was all about. We attended a class together on a Free Friday, and ever since then we've been hooked. Something about BRSC is different, for the good. Life has always been crazy and hectic, but now I know how important it is to take care of my body properly. I've prioritized my day so I can dedicate an hour and a half or so to the gym every night, and every minute of it has been worth it for sure. I've seen many results from attending BRSC. My energy level throughout the day is noticeably increased. Overall, I feel so much better every day. This has helped me outside of the gym as well. Mentally I feel better about myself and how I look. It's also helped me realize how important a positive attitude is in every thing I do. BRSC is a very positive environment with positive people. That has carried into me and my wife's lives."
"I came to BRSC the first time under the impression that it is was Olympic weightlifting. Kyle tricked me into doing CrossFit. After that first day I decided I liked it enough to come back the next day and sign up! Before joining, I was just always searching for something to do. I’m not very good at being bored, so I don’t enjoy downtime. It’s been really awesome to be able to come to the gym and have community friendships and have people that want to join me in participating in other sports as well like running races and triathlons. Before life was a little quieter and boring, whereas now its always more fun. Not only that, but I've seen so many results since starting CrossFit. Physically I have way more muscle definition that I’ve ever had. I can bench press more weight then I ever knew I could. I can do any kind of triathlon sport related race without having to train a ton ahead of time since I cross train all year. Mentally, I feel a lot better coming to the gym and having that time to myself every day. It helps me deal with my job and my life. It is a good outlet to come do something fun and healthy with my good friends here. If you're thinking about trying BRSC, I would say make sure to come in and try it and come back the next day for sure. After that, you will see that you really like it and it will become your favorite place. It is a really inclusive environment, and I think that it attracts everyone with all abilities and all skill levels because that’s what we are made up of."
CrossFit has always been intriguing to me. I would watch competitions with my brother and listen to him talk about his workouts—all while thinking, “Dang, I wish I could do that!” I never had the confidence in myself to just jump in and try it. Over the course of a decade, I felt like my body had been through the ringer. I had battled Stage 3 Melanoma and had three kids. My body was craving more intensity in the health and fitness world. I have a degree in Health Education, and tried lots of other fitness programs, but I needed more. Ultimately, that journey to find optimal health led me to trying CrossFit on a “Free Friday” at BRSC. I went in feeling completely intimated and WAY outside my comfort zone, and I left feeling like I just got the best workout of my life. After that workout, I knew that I needed to go back.
When I finally convinced myself to make the jump (with some encouragement from my husband), and give consistent CrossFit a try, we were both welcomed into the BRSC family with open arms.
Here’s the really amazing thing about BRSC: you are instantly part of an incredible “tribe” where people are genuinely kind, cheer each other on, and encourage you to push yourself outside your comfort zone. The coaching staff is amazing and very knowledgeable. I leave the gym everyday with the knowledge that I have done something challenging and have a plan on how to keep improving.
Coming to BRSC has helped my entire physical health—nutrition, fitness, and sleep. Kyle does a great job incorporating the importance of all those aspects to achieve optimal health. I’ve also noticed an increase in my mental “grit”. I have more confidence in doing really challenging things, learning new skills, and pushing myself harder than I ever thought was possible.
THANK YOU to Kyle and the staff at BRSC for helping me on my continual journey to optimal health!
